- English, 38, comes from a shooting family and is currently working toward becoming an army officer at Fort Benning, Georgia, per CBS News.

Surfer Carissa Moore
Another sport making its Olympic debut, Carissa Moore won the first-ever Olympic gold in her sport. She rode to gold in the shortboard competition on Tuesday, reported NPR.

- At 18 years old, Moore became the youngest world champion surfer, per NPR. Now, at 28 years old, she became the first — and youngest — Olympic medalist in her sport.
Swimmer Katie Ledecky
After having an up-and-down day of competition Wednesday, Katie Ledecky dominated the women’s 1,500 freestyle event — the metric mile swim and the sport’s longest race, reported The New York Times.
