The mastermind behind one of South Korea’s biggest online sex abuse rings has been sentenced to 40 years behind bars, reports said Thursday.
Cho Ju-bin, 25, was found guilty of running a revenge porn ring where at least 74 people, including 16 underage girls, were blackmailed into sharing sexual videos that were then posted in secret chat rooms on Telegram where users could pay to view them, BBC reported.
“The accused has widely distributed sexually abusive content that he created by luring and threatening many victims,” the Seoul Central District Court declared Thursday, the outlet reported, citing the Yonhap news agency.
At least 10,000 people frequented the chat room, which could cost as much as $1,200 for access, BBC reported.
“I apologize to those who were hurt by me,” Cho said in March as he was led away from a Seoul police station.
“Thank you for putting a brake on the life of a devil that could not be stopped.”
Another 124 suspects were arrested along with 18 operators of Telegram chatrooms and on other social media platforms following probes into similar crimes since late 2019, the outlet reported, citing Reuters.
A total of five other defendants were given sentences ranging from seven to 15 years in prison.
