State health officials confirm report of vaccine under-dosing at Oakland Coliseum - San Francisco Chronicle

California public health officials on Monday said that people who received a coronavirus vaccine at the Oakland Coliseum on Feb. 28 and March 1 likely received less than what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends for a single dose — confirming what a TV station reported last week.

The California Department of Public Health on Monday notified people who received a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine after 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 and between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on March 1 about the findings, which were determined with the help from CDC vaccine experts.

Approximately 6,300 individuals had scheduled appointments during that timeframe that “could have been impacted,” said California Department of Public Health spokesperson Ali Bay.

The letter from state health department appears to undermine statements made by the state officials running the Coliseum site in response to inquires about the under-dosing. Last week, officials running the clinic denied that anyone at the Coliseum received too little vaccine.

State health officials found that some individuals may have received a dose that had about 0.22-0.3 milliliters apiece, instead of the recommended 0.3 ml of the Pfizer COVID vaccine. However, the CDC said that any dose larger than 0.15 ml is “safe and does not require the dose to be repeated to protect people against COVID-19,” the letter says.

Bay said that staff at the Coliseum site fixed the dosing difference on March 1.

“The California Department of Public Health has implemented additional training and quality assurance steps as a preventative measure,” state officials said.

The letter comes a few days after KTVU reported that two unnamed emergency medical technicians said that about 4,300 people who were vaccinated at the Oakland Coliseum on March 1 before 2 p.m. “received the wrong vaccine doses.” The syringes had leftover vaccine at the bottom of the container.
