The World Health Organization has released a new scientific brief that updates how someone can receive the novel coronavirus from someone else.
The brief revealed the coronavirus can spread through the following methods:
- Close contact with droplets from an infected person, who coughs, sneezes, speaks or breathes.
- Expulsion of microdroplets that spread over long distances
- Contaminated surfaces
According to NPR, the brief detailed whether the virus can spread from mother to child, from animals to humans and through contact with urine, blood and fecal matter.
The WHO said the virus mostly spreads through close contact with someone who is infected. But the group called for more research into how it transmits through the air.
“Airborne transmission of the virus can occur in health care settings where specific medical procedures, called aerosol generating procedures, generate very small droplets called aerosols. Some outbreak reports related to indoor crowded spaces have suggested the possibility of aerosol transmission, combined with droplet transmission, for example, during choir practice, in restaurants or in fitness classes,” according to the WHO.
However, the WHO said the infection may have come through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. NPR reports
Earlier this week, a group of experts argued in a new letter to the World Health Organization that the agency needs to share more information about how the coronavirus is an airborne virus, which I wrote about for the Deseret News.
The letter — which comes from 239 scientists from 32 different countries, according to The New York Times — called on the WHO “to give more weight to the role of the airborne spread of COVID-19,” according to CNBC.
